i downloaded an mpeg file (Iranbetw1954.mpeg) to my desktop, but when i tried to open it, a dialogue box pops up saying that it is not a file that quicktime understands, and final cut likewise sees an error. can anyone help? btw I'm on a Mac.

vlc is a good video player. you can find it with a search engine or in the FAQ.
